What Are the Symptoms of COVID-19?

How do you know if you have COVID-19? COVID symptoms are similar to symptoms of other viruses, such as influenza and the common cold. If you have any of these COVID symptoms, the best way to find out if you're positive is to get a COVID test. Valley Medical and Wellness provides flu and COVID testing with same-day results at our Burnsville, Minneapolis, and Woodbury locations five days a week.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory condition caused by a type of virus called a coronavirus. COVID is an infectious disease typically spread by miniscule droplets and particles expelled though the mouth and nose of an infected person. You can get COVID by breathing in the air close to an infected person or getting those droplets and particles on your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Not everyone infected with COVID exhibits symptoms. Many infected people have mild symptoms and get better within a few days. Some people infected with the virus develop severe problems, including breathing difficulties. Older people or those with other health issues, such as diabetes or heart disease, are more likely to develop serious symptoms.

What Are the Most Common COVID Symptoms?

If you become infected with COVID-19, you may exhibit some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Fever or chills
  • A dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

These symptoms can start anywhere from 2 to 14 days after you've come into contact with the virus.

What Should You Do if You Exhibit COVID Symptoms?

As you may have observed, many of the symptoms of COVID can also be symptoms of other illnesses, including the flu, RSV, and the common cold. For that reason, if you're exhibiting any of these symptoms, it's a good idea to get a COVID test. This is the only way to determine if you have COVID or another illness.
