How do I know I have fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a medical condition in which you suffer musculoskeletal pain, sleep disorders, memory issues, fatigue, and mood complaints.
If you exhibit symptoms similar to osteoarthritis, but they are felt throughout your body, you may have fibromyalgia. You may also experience the following:
Anxiety and depression
Burning, twitching, or tightness in your muscles
Tender points of pain at the shoulder, back, hips, arms, legs, and neck
Problems with concentration and memory
Fibromyalgia can be hard for conventional medicine to diagnose, even though it’s a rather common illness. You feel pain and suffer disabling symptoms, but evidence of the condition doesn’t show up on blood tests or body scans.
Who is at risk of developing fibromyalgia?
Exactly why some people develop fibromyalgia isn’t completely understood. The condition has a genetic component, and it’s most common in women. Usually, sufferers have another painful disease, such as arthritis or an infection.
Other factors that put you at risk are mood disorders, a sedentary lifestyle, and a history of physical or emotional abuse or trauma.
How is fibromyalgia treated?
At Valley Medical and Wellness, medication is generally the first defense against pain. Over-the-counter and prescription medications, including Cymbalta®, SAVELLA®, and LYRICA®, are used to address fibromyalgia symptoms.
Other therapies offered include:
Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese medicine and involves stimulating specific body points with pressure, heat, and the insertion of fine needles. Acupuncture can raise endorphin levels — your body’s natural painkillers.
Osteopathic manipulative treatment
This hands-on technique manipulates joints and muscles with gentle pressure, resistance, and stretches, alleviating pain, and promoting healing.
Biopuncture is a form of holistic injection therapy. The doctors inject natural substances, derived mainly from plants and minerals, just under the skin. The sites of the injections correspond with pain and traditional acupuncture points and stimulate your immune system to reduce pain and inflammation associated with fibromyalgia.
If you suffer from the confounding, life-disabling symptoms of fibromyalgia, seek treatment at Valley Medical and Wellness. Call the office nearest you for an appointment.
