Headache Q & A

What are the different types of headaches?

Not all headaches are created equal. Yes, they cause pain in the head, scalp, and/or neck, but they vary in location and severity. Types of headaches you may experience include:

Cluster headaches

Cluster headaches cause pain behind your eyes and/or on one side of your head. They may occur for up to six weeks at a time and happen one or more times per day.

Tension headaches

Tension headaches often occur due to stress or environmental triggers. You feel as if you have a tight band squeezing your head and can last from several minutes to several days.

Migraine headaches

Migraines are a neurological experience. They cause intense throbbing and pounding and typically only occur on one side of the head as well as additional symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, auras, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Cervical dystonia

Cervical dystonia is a movement disorder that occurs when a person’s muscles contract uncontrollably. You may experience neck pain that radiates into your head and shoulders.

When should I see a doctor for my headache?

Seek treatment for headache pain if you experience them regularly enough to interfere with your daily activity, including your social and job-related activities.

If you have any of the following symptoms in addition to headaches, you should also come to Valley Medical and Wellness for a consultation:

  • Weakness in one or both of your arms or legs

  • Impaired speech

  • Numbness in your face

  • Fever

  • Vomiting

  • Drowsiness

Even if your headache pain is isolated to your head, scalp, and neck, it can disable you and make your life difficult. Seek treatment as Dr. George and Dr. Zaydman can find the origins of your pain and provide relief.

What treatments are available for headaches?

As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Zadyman offers osteopathic manipulative therapy to help alleviate your headache and/or migraine pain. These gentle but effective manipulations can reduce the number of headache episodes you experience in the future and improve your quality of life.

Certain prescription medications can help you find relief from migraines and headaches, too. Lifestyle changes can also ease the number and intensity of headache episodes. Ensure you get plenty of sleep, eat a wholesome diet, and take steps to reduce stress.

How are BOTOX® injections used to ease headache pain?

The very same BOTOX used to ease the appearance of lines and wrinkles can be effective against headache pain caused by migraines and dystonia. Injections of the purified toxin relax muscles, so headaches are prevented before they even start. Research supports the use of BOTOX for migraine treatment. The doctors inject the compound around your head and neck, where chronic migraines (defined as 15 or more episodes per month) may affect you.
